Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU)

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Background:

The HBCU SIG comprises a coalition of colleges and universities designated as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), actively participating in the annual FEMA Higher Education Symposium. This special interest group (SIG) serves as a platform for collaboration among HBCUs and individuals keen on gaining insights into HBCUs, fostering partnerships in the realms of research, teaching, and learning. Its primary objective is to be a valuable resource, fostering cooperation not only among HBCUs but also with other institutions. The core mission of this SIG is to champion and bolster the notable contributions of HBCUs to the fields of emergency management and homeland security. It seeks to recognize and amplify the profound impact of HBCUs in fortifying disaster resilience and emergency preparedness, both within their institutions and the broader communities they serve. Additionally, the SIG aims to provide support and empowerment for HBCU students aspiring to forge careers in emergency management and homeland security. Furthermore, the SIG is committed to advancing diversity and inclusion within the emergency management profession. Its purpose extends to facilitating and supporting the establishment of Emergency Management and homeland security programs at HBCUs, ensuring a robust foundation for the growth and development of these crucial academic disciplines within the HBCU community.
