Experiential Learning & Leadership SIG

Background

The Experiential Learning and Leadership Special Interest Group (ELL SIG) focuses on exploring experiential education in emergency management and homeland security course curriculum. The ELL SIG serves as a collaborative designed by fostering ideas, developing strategies, and conducting research that looks at how to combine classroom instruction with organized service to the community with an emphasis on civic engagement, reflection, and the application of learning. The purpose of incorporating experiential learning in emergency management and homeland security academic courses would allow students to provide a service that meets an identified community need pertaining to the field which enhances the students’ learning and development, allows them to reflect on their experiences, provides a forum for leadership development, and encourages civic responsibility. The ELL SIG focuses on academic preparation for faculty and practitioners in this discipline to be able to incorporate opportunities for students to bridge the gap between academia and practice by fostering an environment for experiential learning and leadership.
