Get Started

Start on the path to a more secure and resilient Nation

The path we choose for training starts with a desire to prepare, and continues on from the same starting foundation. Though our paths may diverge as we specialize, we get started in same direction. If you are a professional, volunteer, or a private citizen, we can all start with the same 3 steps.

The Steps:

Enroll with FEMA SID

You'll need a FEMA Student Identification (SID) number to apply and get credit for courses

Follow the guide below to enroll and obtain a FEMA Student Identification number.

What is a FEMA SID

FEMA SID is an enrollment system that securly holds your personal information needed to identify you, and ensure you receive credit for your training. The FEMA SID system is hosted by our training partners at the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP). Your FEMA SID is portable accross all FEMA training partner courses, and is used to apply at all FEMA training centers.

FEMA Student Identification (SID) number is a unique number generated and assigned to anyone who needs or is required to take training provided by a FEMA organization. Your FEMA SID uniquely identifies you throughout the FEMA organization and all of its agencies. The goal is for your FEMA SID to serve as your personal identification number instead of your Social Security Number (SSN) in support of FEMA’s effort to decrease/cease the use of SSN for identifying and tracking individuals.

In this section:

  • SID numbers are essential to ensure you receive credit.
  • You only need to fill out the SID registration form once for all your FEMA training.
  • Ensure your FEMA SID information matches the information in your Login.gov account.

How to get a FEMA SID

You'll need to submit the FEMA SID registration form. For more information and requirements, visit the FEMA SID home page.

  • Already Have a FEMA SID?

You can check to see if you have a FEMA SID by inputting your information on the Retrieve SID page. If you already have a FEMA SID, your FEMA SID will be emailed to you. If you attempt to register, you will receive a message that you are already registered.

  • Need help with FEMA SID?

If you are having trouble locating your SID account, need to retrieve your FEMA SID password, change your contact information or want to know more about the FEMA Student Identification system, visit the FEMA SID frequently asked questions page.

Using your FEMA SID with Login.gov

Login.gov is a secure sign in service used by the public to sign in to participating government agencies. We will soon require you to create, or use your existing a Login.gov account to securely access your information on our website for most FEMA SID log in processes like applying to courses or to complete an independent study exam.

To ensure that your SID is compatible, your personal information and one of your Login.gov account email addresses must match the personal information from your FEMA SID profile.

  • Associate Email:

Make sure your FEMA SID email address matches one of your associated login.gov email addresses.

  • Matching User Info:

Make sure your login.gov name and personal information matches your FEMA SID profile.

  • No Student Account?

If you do not have one already, you must sign up for a FEMA SID account to access student resources.

The right training for you

Emergency management, as a practice, is constantly shifting to address the nation’s most pressing threats, risks, and hazards. Currently, there is an identified gap in mid- to advanced-career professional development for emergency managers. While not conferring degrees, NDEMU will address this lack of comprehensive professional development, education and training programs, providing training in a variety of disciplines across the entirety of an emergency manager’s career.

NDEMU works to provide emergency managers access to training where they are located. Courses may be accessed at various satellite locations throughout the nation, including pre-established training sites, as well as areas where education and training opportunities may be historically underdeveloped. In the future, the NDEMU, will work to establish satellite locations with select FEMA Regions and university partners. This is intended to make in-person attendance easier and geographically localize education and training opportunities. NDEMU will continue to offer courses at the National Emergency Training Center campus, as well as mobile deliveries in the field and continue on line and virtual deliveries.

In this section:

  • Addressing gaps in comprehensive professional development.
  • A non-degree conferring university strucutre.
  • Encourages stronger collaborations & partnerships.
  • Making in-person attendance easier.

The university framework

NDEMU will have a traditional university structure, comprised of three specialized schools. This structure is designed to empower emergency managers in every phase of their career. The university structure encourages stronger collaborations and partnerships among government agencies, academia, the private sector, and non-profit organizations, facilitating knowledge exchange and resource sharing. This change affords a greater spectrum of academic programs compared to traditional training institutions and prioritizes the development of critical thinking skills, emphasizes intellectual growth, establishes theoretical foundations, and prepares individuals for diverse roles and challenges to prepare the emergency management community for the threats ahead.

While not conferring degrees, NDEMU will address this lack of comprehensive professional development, education and training programs, providing training in a variety of disciplines across the entirety of an emergency manager’s career.

Curriculum and certificate programs

The initial transition from EMI to NDEMU will take place in August 2024. However, not all aspects of the NDEMU and its various programs will be available at that time. Certificate programs and courses in development will be unveiled throughout the next year, as they are finalized and prepared for implementation. Courses available through NDEMU’s modern e-campus are anticipated to come online over the next year as well as courses offered at various satellite locations, as well. NDEMU encourages all current and prospective students to follow its social media sites and the website for updates on the developing programs and courses.

At the conclusion of training through courses and programs provided by the NDEMU, students will receive a certificate of completion and may be eligible for continuing education units (CEUs), dependent on the course, program and student.

The fastest way to begin taking courses is to visit the the ISP website. You can learn about each course, download materials, and take courses interactively.
