EMI Monthly Newsletter

In January 2021, the Emergency Management Institute (EMI) launched the EMI Monthly Newsletter to share timely news and information to our stakeholders. The EMI Monthly Newsletter provides up-to-date information, including What’s New; Highlights and news from EMI; Updates from the EMI Branches; Course scheduling, development, and availability information; Frequently Asked Questions (Ask a Course Manager), and contact information for each of the EMI Branches.

    The EMI Anywhere Initiative supports the 2022-2026 FEMA Strategic Plan of a bold vision and three ambitious goals designed to address key challenges the agency faces during a pivotal moment in the field of emergency management. This initiative greatly enhances FEMA’s ability to address the increasing range and complexity of disasters, support the diversity of communities, and complement the nation’s growing expectations of the emergency management community.

    Planning for the 2023 National Preparedness Symposium is underway. FEMA met with training, exercise and planning partners, including several state and local emergency management representatives, on 1-4 November to plan for the 2023 National Preparedness Symposium.

  • The Resilience Analysis and Planning Tool (RAPT) is updated and better than ever!

    The Resilience Analysis and Planning Tool (RAPT) (https://www.fema.gov/emergency-managers/practitioners/resilience-analysis-and-planning-tool) is an award winning, free, no-login required online webmap that provides everyone access to powerful data and GIS mapping to understand their community. The RAPT allows users to combine layers of community resilience indicators, infrastructure locations, and hazard data to visualize, prioritize, and implement strategies to build resilience.

    EMI will host the second offering of the virtual STO/RTM EMI Orientation Webinar on October 24-25, 2022, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. EST, both days. The revised webinar is two days long and will cover EMI-specific information on EMI Training and Education, procedures, systems, and points of contact to new STOs and RTMs. Due to the amount of information that is included in the webinar, EMI increased the total time to six hours.

    EMI hosted a pilot offering of a virtual STO/RTM EMI Orientation Webinar on June 27, 2022, from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. EST. The purpose of this webinar was to provide EMI-specific information on EMI Training and Education, procedures, systems, and points of contact to new STOs and RTMs. The initial feedback has been very positive but has also identified some opportunities to improve the webinar.

    Currently scheduled for June 27, 2022, from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. EST, the purpose of the STO/RTM EMI Orientation Webinar is to provide EMI-specific information to new STOs and RTMs on EMI Training and Education, procedures, systems, and points of contact. Topics to be discussed include EMI Anywhere, course codes, scheduling, analytics, curriculum management, student applications and admissions, instructor management, and EMI branch overviews. This webinar will be offered twice annually.

  • EMI Bids Farewell to Deputy Superintendent Mike Sharon

    On April 29, 2022, after three and a half years as EMI’s Deputy Superintendent, Mike Sharon will be moving on to share his emergency management knowledge and experience with the Department of Agriculture, Office of Homeland Security. EMI wishes Mike the best of luck in his new position, and we thank him for all he did during his time with us.

    Plans are taking shape for the 2022 National Preparedness Symposium (NPS), hosted by the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) in May. The event will include nearly a dozen plenary and more than 30 breakout sessions, according to organizers.

  • EMI Trainer Program

    EMI has discontinued the Trainer Program effective February 1, 2022. EMI will continue to offer the Effective Communication (IS-242), Instructional Presentation and Evaluation Skills (E/L-141), and Introduction to Instructional Design Methods (E/K-610) courses but will no longer issue separate Basic Instructor or Basic Instructional Design certificates.

  • Return to Resident Courses

    Effective November 27, 2021 all students and instructors attending resident training at the National Emergency Training Center (NETC) for the National Fire Academy (NFA), or Emergency Management Institute (EMI) are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
