In January 2021, the Emergency Management Institute (EMI) launched the EMI Monthly Newsletter to share timely news and information to our stakeholders. The EMI Monthly Newsletter provides up-to-date information, including What’s New; Highlights and news from EMI; Updates from the EMI Branches; Course scheduling, development, and availability information; Frequently Asked Questions (Ask a Course Manager), and contact information for each of the EMI Branches.

EMI 70th Anniversary and National Preparedness Month
In April, the Emergency Management Institute (EMI) began EMI’s year-long 70th Anniversary celebration. EMI’s Superintendent, Dr. Jeff Stern, has recorded a video message that highlights the anniversary theme, “70 years of training those who serve our Nation.”

EMI 70th Anniversary and National Preparedness Month
As part of the EMI 70th Anniversary, please join us for an update on the National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident Command System (ICS) Core and Position Specific courses. We will be providing updates on the status and direction of ongoing projects for both curricula. We are hosting two Zoom sessions on September 24th at 11:00 am Eastern and 3:00 pm Eastern.

FEMA Releases DC HSEMA ICS-300 Blended/Asynchronous Course Materials
FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute (EMI) is pleased to host course materials for jurisdictions interested in a virtual approach to ICS-300 delivery. The District of Columbia Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (DC HSEMA) developed the course, which EMI has validated as meeting all requirements in the Program of Instruction.

Return to Standard Scheduling Process andNETC COVID-19 Entrance Policy
Effective immediately, EMI will no longer require a COVID mitigation plan and approval for Field “L” Course deliveries. L course scheduling will revert to the standard, pre-March 2020 process.

After 13 months of pandemic closure, the April resumption of classes at the Emergency Management Institute (EMI) was a wonderful start to EMI’s 70th Anniversary celebration. This event began on April 30th and will continue as a year-long celebration.

Resumption of EMI Resident Training on the NETC Campus
You may have noticed through social media or via EMI’s website that we will resume in-person, resident training on the National Emergency Training Center (NETC) campus starting the week of April 5th.

EMI Anywhere
“EMI Anywhere” is a new term you will hear from EMI this year. This refers to our efforts to expand deliveries outside of the EMI campus to meet the students that need our training wherever they are in the nation. This effort will include increasing our virtual capabilities, seeking additional off campus physical classroom venues, and partnering with states, territories, and tribes to deliver our EMI courses at their locations.

What’s New
As you are aware, emergency management personnel are around the nation are actively engaged in leading, or supporting, community COVID-19 efforts and vaccination campaigns. Operational responsibilities, travel restrictions, and quarantines (for those who travel out of state) continue to impact the number of students able to attend scheduled classes at NETC. As a result, in-person courses at the National Emergency Training Center (NETC) will continue to be suspended until April 4, 2021.

What’s New
The Emergency Management Institute (EMI) continues to monitor the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as it relates to COVID-19. To mitigate the spread of COVID-19, the CDC encourages organizations to promote social distancing, hold meetings via videoconferencing, reduce non-essential travel, and adjust or postpone events and gatherings. EMI also continues to evaluate the local and national situation and will provide regular updates.
