To earn the Climate Change Adaptation Certificate for Emergency Managers, participants must successfully complete the four foundation courses, and select & complete three elective courses, and submit a satisfactory capstone project that demonstrates the application of climate adaptation principles to their specific contexts.

  • AWR-347: Climate Adaptation Planning for Emergency Management

    • Course Overview

      This eight-hour awareness-level course will prepare participants to describe the principles of climate adaptation planning for emergency management and first response processes. This course will train participants to be able to discuss the impact of weather hazards on critical infrastructure and key resources, and explain how climate change projects will affect those impacts.

  • MGT-484: Nature-Based Solutions for Mitigating Hazards

    • Course Overview

      This four hour, management level course highlights nature-based solutions as important and effective tools for mitigating hazards and climate impacts. The course provides planners, government officials, and hazard mitigation professionals information on the types, applications, and benefits of nature-based solutions as well as the common barriers for their use.

  • PER-378: Coastal Hazard and Vulnerability Assessment Tools

    • Course Overview

      This performance-level course will provide a detailed overview of the tools and technologies available to assess the hazards and the vulnerabilities of coastal communities. These tools include real-time data collection tools and technologies, as well as web-based assessment tools, such as NOAA, FEMA and other publicly available mapping and planning programs.

  • MGT-490-V: Conducting Whole Community Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessments

    • Course Overview

      This management-level, instructor-led course teaches the art and science of conducting a Community Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment, a critical tool for building resilient communities. Participants gain the tools to integrate climate projections and products into a Threat and Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (THIRA). Participants learn to prioritize target capabilities while considering natural, technological, and human-caused hazards and their cascading effects. Participants will also focus on identifying underserved populations and emphasizing socioeconomic strategies to conduct a Social Vulnerability Assessment, which is crucial for preparing vulnerable communities for disasters.

    • Course Overview

      This awareness-level, asynchronous web-based training will provide participants with a general overview of climate change and how it relates to emergency management. The course will review the root causes of climate change and will address the impacts of climate change on communities

      This performance-level, live virtual training will provide participants with an overview of climate change and its impact on disaster management and vulnerable populations. This course will review available tools, such as the Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool, and discuss how to incorporate them into emergency plans.

      This four-hour seminar will provide emergency managers with important information regarding climate change and the effect it could have on underserved populations after major disasters.       This course equips participants with skills and knowledge to evaluate future climate change impacts, utilize FEMA’s Community Lifeline Toolkit, conduct strategic planning and analysis, and resolve climate impacts through whole community preparedness and resilience with emphasis on underserved populations and disadvantaged communities.

  • MGT-302-V: Integrating Climate Change and Equity into Preparedness Activities

    • Course Overview

      This course prepares emergency planners, managers, and first responders to develop strategies for reducing the societal impact of future climate scenarios and extreme weather events through the National Preparedness System. Participants will enhance capabilities to address climate risks and address vulnerabilities by adopting best practices for incorporating vulnerable populations into risk assessments, planning, equipping, training, and exercises. By the end of the course, participants will have the ability to enhance whole community preparedness and capabilities for climate risks with the best practices and resources.
