IS-917: Active Shooter Leadership

Course Overview

This course is designed for organizational leaders to lead whole community efforts to prevent, defeat, and recover from an active-shooter / targeted violence event to enhance a community's level of preparedness.

Course Objectives:

Prevention: Understand how one may lead to reduce the chance of an employee committing an act of violence in the workplace.

  • Identify the terminology used to define the problem of active shooter and mass shooting events.

  • Describe opportunities to create an increased sense of belonging among employees.

  • Describe actions organizational leaders may take to create a more effective and supportive workplace culture.

  • Recognize options as a leader to support employees experiencing depression and anxiety.

  • Discuss how to lead through conflict while ensuring accountability and dignity for employees.

  • Describe options for how leaders may respond to an employee engaging in threatening behavior.

Preparation: Understand how an organizational leader may plan for, prepare, and lead others to respond to an active-shooter incident.

  • Describe how to develop or improve an emergency action plan for responding to a potential active-shooter situation.

  • Describe the role of leaders in rehearsing active shooter emergency action plans.

  • Identify the role of leaders in the aftermath of an active-shooter incident.
