National Dam Safety Program's Technical Seminar No. 17, Risk and Risk Management in Dam Safety
The National Dam Safety Review Board - Dam Safety Training Work Group is pleased to announce the Seventeenth in a series of highly successful technical dam safety training seminars. The topic for the National Dam Safety Program’s Technical Seminar No. 17 will be Risk and Risk Management in Dam Safety. The seminar will take place February 17-18, 2010, on the campus of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) training center in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
The purpose of the seminar is to enable dam safety professionals to introduce risk methodologies to help manage their dam portfolios, develop more defensible recommendations and decisions, and improve communications between dam owner, regulators, and the public who depend on the professionals to provide safe dams.
The seminar is intended for individuals involved with dam safety programs, safety communication with the public, and dams remediation – bringing together inspectors, designers, consultants, owners, contractors, and regulators, – for two days of dynamic presentations. The presentations will cover all aspects of risk in dam safety, including such topics as:
- Assessing your dam portfolio
- Managing your portfolio of dams
- Communicating Risk
- What to do while you wait for funding
- Influencing Decision Makers
- Remediating problems at dams
The seminar will utilize lessons learned from local, state, and Federal agencies to highlight how risk methodologies have been used to manage their dam portfolios and limited funding streams, to maintain safe dams and to protect life, property, and the environment from adverse events. Embedded in these lessons are important lessons for dam safety officials for managing risk when funding is not available to repair deficiencies in their projects and how to effectively communicate program needs and safety concern to decision makers.
The seminar will include presentations from representatives of local, State, and Federal dam safety organizations, as well as experts from the private sector and dam owners. Individual presentations will be complemented by panel discussions where the audience will have the opportunity to interact with recognized experts to pursue innovative ideas and concepts. Take advantage of this very worthwhile training and plan now to attend.
