National Dam Safety Program's Technical Seminar No. 19 - Filters, Drains, and Geotextiles in Dams and Levees

The National Dam Safety Review Board - Dam Safety Training Work Group is pleased to announce the Nineteenth Annual National Dam Safety Program Technical Seminar, “Filters, Drains, and Geotextiles in Dams and Levees”. The seminar will take place February 22-23, 2012, on the campus of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) training center in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

The purpose of the seminar is to enable dam and levee safety professionals to develop an understanding of the application of filters, drains, and geotextiles in dams and levees.

The seminar is intended for individuals involved with dam safety programs, levee safety programs, safety communication with the public, and dam and levee remediation – bringing together inspectors, designers, consultants, owners, contractors, and regulators, – for two days of dynamic presentations.  The presentations will cover many critical aspects of filters, drains, and geotextiles in dams and levees with topics such as:

  • The History of Filters
  • Fundamentals
  • Internal Erosion
  • Guidance and Criteria
  • Field Performance Case Studies

The seminar will utilize lessons learned from local, state, and federal agencies to highlight the use of filters, drains, and geotextiles to construct and maintain safe dams and levees.

The seminar will include presentations from representatives of local, state, and federal government organizations, as well as experts from the private sector and dam and levee owners. Individual presentations will be complemented by a panel discussion where the audience will have the opportunity to interact with recognized experts to pursue innovative ideas and concepts. Take advantage of this worthwhile training and plan now to attend.
